WEB HOSTING DNN installation options
DNN installation options Article ID:274

3Essentials customers have two options when choosing to have a DNN (DotNetNuke) installation on their site... they can install themselves (self-installation) or use a 3Essentials DNN installation.

  • DNN Self Installation
    • Obtain the DNN install package from dotnetnuke.com and follow their installation instructions... Please see the following KB article which has information to help you with your DNN install regarding security considerations and common stumbling blocks.
  • 3Essentials DNN instdallation:
    • 3Essentials offers the following solutions for installing DotNetNuke (DNN) on your site:
      • DNN 3.1: You may find a DNN 3.1 installation in your control panel under ASP.Net Web Applications icon.  This installation can only be installed in a subdirectory of your site, like www.mydomain.com/dnn.  Due to the age of this version, 3Essentials does not recommend you install this version... our operations team will be removing this from the control panel.
      • DNN latest stable release: The 3Essentials support team will gladly install the current, latest stable release of DNN as listed on dotnetnuke.com for you at your request for no charge.
        • We will only perform this is a new/fresh installation, with a new/empty database; we will not perform an upgrade to an existing installation.  If you wish to perform an upgrade to an existing installation, we refer you to dotnetnuke.com for installation packages, instructions, and support.  To request us to perform a DNN installation on your site for you, please submit a support request with the following information:
          • Directory name where they want DNN Installed. ie... www.domain.com/dnn (or "root" if you wish in the root of the site, i.e., www.domain.com)
            • If you request a ROOT installation, please be aware that we will be placing files in your httpdocs folder, and subfolders as part of the installation.  If you have folders and files of the same name, they will be REPLACED as part of our installation.  When submitting your request, please indicate that you are aware of this, and approve the installation anyway.  If you are unsure what files/folders are created by the installation, visit dotnetnuke.com and check the DNN install package for the version concerned..
            • If you request a SUBDIRECTORY installation (like www.domain.com/dnn), please note the following... Many customers ask for this, and then immediately after want to make that accessible as www.domain.com... they do this by putting a index.html or index.asp file with a redirect in their www.domain.com location, which redirects all visitors to www.domain.com/dnn.  This works, however it can have negative consequences in your search engine rankings (with google, yahoo, etc).  As such, we strongly recommend you think about your site structure before you make this request.  If you don't intend to have a actual website content at www.domain.com, and your main site would actually be at www.domain.com/dnn, it would be a better idea to simply have the DNN installation put in your website ROOT to begin with.
          • Your domain limits must have 1 available MSSQL database, as we will be creating a new/fresh MSSQL database for DNN installation.
