Question:
  • Are multiple concurrent POP connections to the same mailbox supported? (i.e., for desktop mail client and iPhone) 

On servers where multiple concurrent POP connections are not supported, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • You may receive the following error when trying to make multiple POP connections to a single mailbox: "ERR Unable to log on. Only one connection to a mailbox permitted at a time."
  • You may encounter the following symptoms: Outlook prompts for mail password even though the password has been saved.
Answer:
  • For shared hosting plans:
    • Shared servers with Mail Enable: multiple concurrent POP connections to single mailbox is not supported.
    • Shared servers with Smartermail: multiple concurrent POP connections to single mailbox is supported and should work by default.
  • For Dedicated Managed Servers or Virtual Managed Servers hosting plans:
    • servers with Mail Enable: multiple concurrent POP connections to single mailbox is not supported by default, but we will enable upon request for dedicated/virtual managed server customers.  Please submit a support request and reference this kb article.
    • servers with Smartermail: multiple concurrent POP connections to single mailbox is supported and should work by default.
  • For Dedicated or Virtual Servers (unmanaged): 
    • not applicable... customer installs and configures their own mail solution.
