If the server is not in Active Directory, then use the Local Group Policy Editior to set the license type for the server. This replaces the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration App that is present in Windows 2008
Start > Run gpedit.msc (Local Group Policy)
Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Remote Desktop Services - Remote Desktop Session Host > Licensing
Enable "Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode" to enable and set the type to "Per user"
Enable "Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers" and set the name to your server's name. For example d789
To check the status of licensing, open Server Manager and go to:
Server Manager -> Remote Desktop Services -> Servers.
Rt-Click the server and choose RD Licensing Diagnoser
- The RD Licensing Diagnoser will open and display results. If there are any errors, they would be displayed here.
- Scroll to the bottom and under Remote Desktop Services License Server Information you should see a summary that shows the license server specified and under Credentials and Connectivity, the status should state "Available".
Return to Server Manager -> Remote Desktop Services -> Servers
Rt-Click the server and choose RD Licensing Manager.
- Here you can verify the type of licenses installed on the server and how many are installed
