Hosting multiple DNN portal sites from a single DNN installation

Some customers have inquired about if our hosting services allow the hosting of multiple DNN portals from a single DNN installation...

I.e., they'd purchase a single domain plan, set up a DNN installation, and create multiple DNN portals in the installation... then utilize hostheaders/domain aliases to point those domains to this one domain's DNN installation... as illustrated here:

The answer is yes, but with an important limitation: when you create aliases, it is aliased for both WEB and EMAIL traffic.  As such, you CANNOT have unique email addresses on each domain.  You can have unique portal content for each domain because the DNN installation handles the differentiating the sites... but for mail, they are treated completely as aliases.  So, continuing our example, this means that:

If you require unique email addresses, then you can't use the single DNN installation and domain aliasing function.  You'd have to have a multi-domain plan, and each domain would have to host it's own DNN installation. Then, each domain would have it's own unique namespace for the mail domain.

In summary, within our services, you can:

  • have a single domain plan running a DNN portal that services multiple portal sites by use of multiple domain aliases, but you lose the ability to have unique email addresses on each domain (different plans include different number of domain alias, see plan details... additional aliases available as an add-on).

OR

  • have a multi-domain plan, but run a SEPARATE DNN installation for each. In this fashion, you can have individual mail accounts for each domain, but you'll lose the advantages you're trying to gain by hosting all portals off of a single DNN installation.

There are also some other considerations when running multiple portals within a single DNN instance:
  • all portals will execute within the same application pool/worker process, and are limited by our policies on excessive resource utilization.
  • portals in the same instance will use the same database, and are subject to our policies limiting maximum database size.
