How-To Add Domain Aliases

A Domain Alias is a feature that allows one website to be known/accessed by different names.  This is different than domain forwarding or redirect, where a visitor types www.domainA.com/somefile.htm into their browser, and is redirected or forwarded to www.domainB.com, and will see the URL actually change in their browser.

A domain alias instead is one single site, known by multiple names. For example, if domainB.com is an alias of domainC.com (or vice versa), whether a visitor types in www.domainA.com/somefile.htm or www.domainB.com/somefile.htm, they will be served the same file "somefile.htm"; the URL in the web browser will not change. The URL will still read the name of the domain they typed in.  One set of website files, accessible by either name.

Depending on your plan, you may or may not have domain aliases included - check the details of your plan, or submit a ticket to the support team if you have questions on whether domain aliases are included in your plan.

If you do have domain aliases, the following instructions will tell you how to add an alias:

  1. First, just like your original domain, the alias domain must be registered and configured to use 3Essentials nameservers.  If you need further information on domain registration and nameserver configuration, see our Domain Registration page.
  2. Second, adding the domain alias will vary depending on the version of control panel used for your hosting plan - see the following table.  If you are unsure which version control panel versionl is used for your hosting plan, check the title bar in your browser when logged into the control panel; it will specify the version.
